My name is Damien. I’m a 21 year old trans guy with an extremely unsupportive family. I came out to them about a year ago, and shortly afterwards things began to go downhill, so I moved in with a friend. I lost my job at a family run surgery center purely for being trans, and after that my father kicked me off of the health insurance with the hopes of preventing me from transitioning. Virginia doesn’t have any legal protections for transgender people like myself, and because of that I’ve had problems being hired for jobs. As of late, my only income comes from driving with Uber while I continually apply for jobs in the hopes that one will stick.

Trans people like myself have an incredibly high rate of unemployment (at least 2x the national average) due to job discrimination. We also face higher than average rates of police violence, and nearly half of all trans people have attempted suicide because of the discrimination we face. Transitioning is vital to a trans person’s mental and physical wellbeing, and those who have done so report happier, healthier lives.

Business with Uber is very slow and inconsistent and I don’t own my own car, and as I mentioned before I have no legal protections here when it comes to finding a job. This makes transitioning incredibly difficult, if not impossible. I’ve seen my mental health decline steadily in the past few months because I cannot be my authentic self. I’m trying to get top surgery, but without insurance and a steady income I’m going to need a little help.
